2012 An Olympic Scale Disaster

The end is nigh, 2012 to be precise according to the Mayan calendar. What seems like a farfetched theory should not be dismissed so quickly. There is supporting evidence from several cultures and traditions for a major, potentially catastrophic event to occur on the 21^st of December 2012.

Winter solstice 2012 will mark the end of the Mayan calendar and the end of history according to the Chinese ‘I Ching’ (Book Of Changes).  The earth will be in perfect alignment with the sun and the centre of our milky way for the first time in 25800 years.

"A lot of [people] are genuinely frightened" reports David Morrison, senior scientist with the NASA Astrobiology Institute. Psychiatrists are worried that this fear within people could lead to increased incidences of mass suicides.

According to Mayan tradition the earth’s poles will shift, the north pole and the south pole of the earth will switch, causing devastating earthquakes and tsunamis.  Such a pole shift has even been scientifically predicted by Albert Einstein in 1955 however the date of such an event and its impacts were not stated.

This leads one to believe that following the current situation in Japan and elsewhere around East Asia that the polar shift is already in progress. If the shift happens in a matter of hours or days there will be catastrophic consequences. If the shift happens over a longer period of time there will be longer term effects such as climate change – global warming.

"I've had two teenagers who were considering killing themselves, because they didn't want to be around when the world ends … Two women in the last two weeks said they were contemplating killing their children and themselves so they wouldn't have to suffer through the end of the world." Morrison confessed.

Consultant Psychiatrist Bruce Dhala worries that “These theories and ideas, however untrue, can influence a minority of people who are already susceptible to depression and anxiety and compound their suffering. In addition, end of the world theories lend themselves very well to the development of cults, which can have disastrous consequences.”  

However NASA have dismissed all the myths and theories for the end of the world or any major event occurring in 2012. Morrison confidently claims that “All of the talk about doomsday is a big hoax, perpetuated on the internet with people trying to make money… there is no problem there... Don’t worry about 2012 and enjoy 2013 when it comes” he went on to dismiss any dangers of changes in the earth’s polarity “They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth.”

Men of religion however are dubious and some contemplate with the idea that such 2012 prophecies are a potential sign of the ‘Judgement Day’ and the end of the world as we know it.

There is certainly an air of mystery surrounding the end of 2012; what the future holds, no one knows for sure. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed and hope that we’ll get to see the Olympics.
